THIS IS A SMALL TEST I MADE TO SEE IF I COULD CREATE A FLAME FOR A
TORCH, LIKE THE KIND YOU SEE IN DUNGEONS, CASTLES, ETC....
FIRST, I CREATED A SIMPLE 2 COLOR FLAME ANIM IN DPAINT, 60 FRAMES
LONG. TO BE REALLY REALISTIC, (MY FAVORITE KIND OF REALISTIC!)...YOU SHOULD
USE MORE COLORS, BUT THIS WAS JUST A TEST...THESE IMAGES WERE SAVED OUT AS
INDIVIDUAL IFF'S, AND WERE THEN USED AS A SEQUENTIAL IMAGE-MAP ON A SIMPLE
PLANE IN LIGHTWAVE.... (YOU COULD USE D-PAINT, IM R/T, IMAGE F/X,
ANIMBUSTER, ECT... TO SAVE `ANIM.FLAME.60' AS INDIVIDUAL IFF'S.)
THE TRICK IS TO USE IT AS A "CLIP-MAP", AND THE PROGRAM WILL NOT SEE
THE BLACK BACKGROUND, AND ONLY USE THE ONE, OR OTHER COLORS USED TO MAKE
THE ANIM...IT WILL TREAT PURE BLACK JUST LIKE VIDEO TREATS IT WHEN YOU USE
A GENLOCK....IN OTHER WORDS..INVISIBLE!
THE ONLY THINGS THAT ARE NEEDED TO BE DONE, IS LOAD THE ANIMATED
"SEQUENCE" IN THE SURFACES MENU FOR THE SURFACE COLOR AS A TEXTURE MAP, DO
NOT USE ANTIALIASING, OR IT WILL CUT OFF SMALL LINES OR SEPERATED BITS OF
COLOR..(TRY IT AND SEE!)...AND DONT USE BLENDED PIXELS...... UNDER THE
OBJECT MENU...USE CLIP MAP, LOAD THE SAME "SEQUENCE" AS A TEXTURE MAP,
AGAIN NO ANTIALIASING, NO BLENDING OF PIXELS, BUT THIS TIME CLICK ON
"NEGATIVE IMAGE"...IF YOU DO NOT, THE FLAME, IN THIS CASE, WILL BE THE
INVISIBLE PART, AND THE BLACK BACKGROUND OF THE FLAT PLANE OBJECT WILL BE
SOLID!...
I HAVE INCLUDED THE ANIMIMATED FLAME, THE SCENE FILE, ETC...FOR YOU
GUYS TO EXPERIMENT WITH....REMEMBER, THIS WAS ONLY A TEST...IF IT HAD BEEN
AN ACTUAL FLAME, IT WOULD PROBABLY HAVE BURNED THE TOP OF YOUR MONITOR?....
THIS FLAME WAS ORIGINALLY DESIGNED FOR THE GARDEN VARIETY WALL TORCH, SO IT
IS A BIT TOO INTENSE FOR THE CANDLESTICK...BUT I WANTED TO TRY IT OUT FAST,
AND THIS OBJECT IS ALREADY THERE!
THIS SAME TECHNIQUE CAN BE APPLIED TO ANY OTHER 3D PACKAGE THAT
SUPPORTS `CLIP' OR `TRANSPARENCY' MAPPING.
IF ANYONE COMES UP WITH GOOD VARIATIONS, OR OBJECTS, ETC...LET ME
KNOW, SO I CAN TRY THEM OUT, OK?
HAPPY TRACING................................. - BILL ARBANAS -
